Puppies joined a group of students on the yoga mat at NAIT this week. Students who signed up for NAITSA’s Puppy Yoga event got to take part in two back-to-back, half-hour yoga sessions surrounded by adorable rescue puppies.
“Puppy yoga is designed to give you a bit of a break out of your day to interact with some animals that need homes, but also to give your body an opportunity to relax,” says Chantelle Theroux, the yoga instructor at the event.
Theroux sees the value in this activity as she has even instructed goat yoga classes in the past. The NAITSA team considered goat yoga but realized bringing goats into the school would be tricky, so they decided on puppy yoga.
Students paid a five dollar donation fee to attend the class with all proceeds going to hart. The humane animal rescue team (hart) is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing stray or abandoned dogs in Edmonton and the surrounding area.
All the puppies that took part in the yoga session are up for adoption and were excited to be pet and cuddled by everyone in the class.
“If people are interested in putting in an application they would have to go through hart,” says Katie Spencer, the NAITSA Event Marketing Coordinator.
For those who missed out on Puppy Yoga, as spots were extremely limited, Spencer says NAITSA usually does some type of yoga event each semester. As for next semester, the yoga event is not yet known but students can keep an eye on their NAIT portal for announcements.
