NAIT’s women’s hockey team playing for gold

NAIT’s women’s hockey team has its sights set on winning gold. This is the first time since 2016 that they will take part in the ACAC Championship series. Their final matchup is against their 109 Street rival, the MacEwan Griffins.

“We have a great culture, and these girls will win if they want to win,” said Stef Thomson, NAIT women’s head coach.

MacEwan finished second in the ACAC regular season, five points behind NAIT. The Griffins boasted a 17-5-2 record, behind NAIT’s 19-2-3.

The Ooks prepare for their final series

MacEwan will look to be the first team to win three straight championships since NAIT did it from 2014-16. NAIT has finished third in the previous two seasons.

Thomson, first-year head coach, says she isn’t worried about the pressure placed on her team.

“We’re a new team. We’re not the same as past years, and we don’t play the same,” said Thomson, “We have so much faith in this team.”

Captain, Brittney Savard added, “Everyone knows their role. We’ve played [MacEwan] six times, so it’s nothing new.”

Of the six regular season match-ups the Ooks took the series four games to two. Five of the six games were decided by one goal, including the outdoor game at Falun in December.
