NAIT staff and students’ routes set to change as LRT station closes temporarily

Edmonton Transit Services is advising LRT passengers who use the NAIT station to find alternative transportation as they temporarily suspend service to NAIT for four months.

Starting April 6, the city will begin routine system maintenance. The project TLC for LRT includes upgrades to LRT stations, infrastructure and tracks.

The tunnel between the Coliseum and Belvedere stations will get revitalization work from April 28 to August 30. During this work, Capital and Metro Lines will only run five-car trains, which the NAIT station cannot accommodate. The last station the Metro Line will stop at is Kingsway/Royal Alex.

“We understand the Capital Line frequency reduction and suspension of LRT service to NAIT will cause a temporary inconvenience for people travelling to and from north Edmonton,” says Lloyd Meyer, the Manager of LRT Operations.

NAIT is working with the city to make it easier for passengers to catch the busses from Kingsway/Royal Alex to NAIT.

We need to try and make sure that the routes that are currently in placed are timed out properly at Kingsway/Royal Alex station. What we’d also like to see is an express route between NAIT and downtown.

Jason Roth, NAITSA Advocacy Director

Roth added that although the project is an inconvenience to students and staff, the work being done is understandable. The school is working on informing current and incoming students about the service suspension.

The Central station platform will also be closed from April 6 to 27 to upgrade lighting and ceiling tiles. Trains will still travel through the station but will not stop to pick up or drop off passengers.
