Winter seems to have snuck up on us this past week. Although you may be tempted to scold at the snow and the cold temperatures, here are some fun activities to help you get through the winter months.
Lace-up your skates. Edmonton has dozens of rinks around the city that are free to use. Although outdoor rinks are not open yet, they will be opening within a few weeks. Until then you can check the public skating schedule for indoor rinks.
Visit a winter festival. Edmonton has plenty of festivals that are celebrated every winter season. Candy Cane Lane is approaching its 50th anniversary. This year it opens on December 7th. The Festival of Trees begins in late November at the Shaw Conference Centre, where you can see lots of amazing Christmas trees and gingerbread houses. In January you can catch some beautifully sculpted ice sculptures on Whyte Ave.
Go skiing or snowboarding. Ski hills in Alberta will soon be open for the winter. If you don’t want to leave the city, you can check out places like Rabbit Hill Snow Resort or Snow Valley Ski Hill. If you are willing to travel out of Edmonton check out Marmot Basin or Lake Louise Ski Resort, the largest ski resort in the Rocky Mountains.
Explore Edmonton on snowshoes. Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the wilderness and get some exercise. Edmonton offers snowshoeing classes and tours if you don’t own your own pair of snowshoes. Here is a list of places that allow snowshoeing in Edmonton.
