When trying to find any sort of cosmetic product it’s important to know your undertone. Knowing your undertone can help you pick a proper foundation shade or even a lipstick or eyeshadow colour as well.
One thing you should know is that skin tone and undertone are not the same. Skin tone can change over time but undertone remains the same. Undertones are the colours underneath the skin while skin tone is the colour on the skin. Understating the difference is what’s going to help keep your makeup looking natural and flawless.
There are three undertones: cool, warm and neutral.
Cool: If you see hints of blue, pink or red beneath the skin, you have a cool undertone.
Warm: If the skin tone of your skin is yellow or gold, you have warm undertones.
Neutral: If you have a mixture of warm and cool hues, or if your undertone is the same colour as your skin colour, you have neutral undertones.
So now here are a few tricks to help you find your undertone.
Flip your arm over and look at the inner part of the arm and at the veins and inside of the wrist. If your veins are more green you have a warm undertone. If your veins are more blue or purple in colour then you have a cool undertone.
Or you could try the jewelry test. Place a piece of silver or gold jewelry up against your skin. If gold looks most flattering you have a warm undertone. And if silver looks more flattering you have a cool undertone. However, this technique does not work for neutral undertones.
A tip for finding a foundation if you’re not sure of your undertone. Find your skin tone in both a warm and cool undertone and swatch them on your neck. Whichever shade disappears into the skin is the undertone you should go with.
