Premier Rachel Notley announced Monday the province will fund the construction of a $30 million transportation facility in St. Albert. The government hopes to improve transit service in the capital region and provide convenience for commuters.
“Commuters will have improved access to jobs, health care, education, recreation and shopping. Any great city has to have great public transit,” states Notley.
“It’s better for the environment, it’s more efficient and it’s a boost for the local economy,” furthers the premier.
Along with saving commuters fuel consumption and wear and tear on their vehicles, the transportation hub will serve as St. Albert’s principal transfer and operation station. It will also become a terminal for Edmonton’s Metro LRT Line in the future.
“It’s a long time coming. We are grateful to the province for providing funding for the Campbell Park and Ride facility,” shares Cathy Heron, mayor of St. Albert.
Construction is expected to begin in in May, with completion targeted in May 2019. The transportation station will be located west of St. Albert Trail and east of Campbell Road.
The hub will include 800 parking stalls for Albertans, “which will help promote the use of public transit here in St. Albert and the region,” says Heron.
The investment is part of a $1.5 billion provincial-wide commitment to public transit over the next five years.
“This park-and-ride facility is one of dozens of public transit projects our government is investing in across Alberta to make public transit an attractive option to single-occupant vehicle trips, making life better for busy Albertans,” shares Brian Mason, Minister of Transportation.
The project will be referred to as the Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Station, with possible renaming yet to be confirmed.
