The Citadel is getting significant upgrades to its five performance spaces after receiving funding from the Canadian Cultural Spaces Fund on Tuesday. The $504,262 will be put towards safety and technology upgrades to modernize the theatre.
Chantell Ghosh, Executive Director of the Citadel says it will be used for, “upgrading sound, lighting, technical equipment, some of our programs that our set designers and our team uses to build these amazing sets.”
The Maclab and Shoctor Theatre will be getting
- LED light fixtures
- Video projectors
- Sound consoles
- Stage draperies
Ghosh says that all of these improvements are an investment to bring larger productions to the Citadel. They want to make sure that all five of the Citadel’s venues have the latest technology and run at the highest professional level, to give the best experience possible to the actors and the audience.
“We’re investing in technology to do even more innovative things on stage, to attract bigger productions to be able to use our space in a more innovative way,” says Gosh.
The purpose of the Canadian Cultural Spaces Fund is to improve cultural infrastructure in Canada. The federal government has set aside 168.2 million dollars for it.
Founded in 1965, the Citadel is Edmonton’s first professional theatre. They have over 300 performances a year and reach an audience of over 130,000 annually.
