The force is strong with the Edmonton Oil Kings, as they unveiled a new Star Wars-themed jersey. The jerseys were worn on the franchise’s Star Wars Night.
The game between the Saskatoon Blades and the Edmonton Oil Kings on November 4th was the chosen game for the themed event, with the Oil Kings wearing their new jerseys as a part of the night. The jerseys featured Star Wars spacecraft drawings, as well as the team’s name scripted in a Star Wars language along the cuff.
The jerseys were auctioned off throughout the night, with proceeds going to the local charity, Sorrentino’s Compassion House. The Compassion House is an organization in Edmonton offering reasonably priced housing for women travelling into the city for cancer treatment. Compassion House Foundation was established in 1998 to build a facility to support Northern Albertan women with breast cancer during treatment and the early stages of recovery.
The original house opened in 2002 and offered six guest suites and common areas with everything included for women traveling to Edmonton. Since then, hundreds of women from more than 225 communities have stayed at Sorrentino’s Compassion House.
“We rely on the community support in order to keep our guest fees reasonable at $25 dollars a night for the women who have to stay with us,” says Mellissa Kraft, Compassion House Executive Director. “We rely on that community support so games like this and the community rallying to support women going through cancer means so much.”
The home team ended up coming short in the game, losing 3-2 in front of 11,173 at Rogers Place.
