NAIT welcomes new Chef in Residence Rod Butters

Okanagan chef Rod Butters is NAIT’s 10th chef in residence and paid a visit to students in the Culinary Arts program from March 12-16.

Launched in 2009, the Hokanson Chef in Residence program provides NAIT’s culinary arts students with a chance to learn from inspirational chefs from across the world. Students have the chance to get expertise and advice in specifics areas such as pastry, bread making and ice craving.

Butters is an award-winning chef in the B.C. Okanagan Valley. He currently owns three restaurants in the area and is opening a fourth. While Butters has had the opportunity to work in venues around the world, including Vancouver and Hong Kong, he has earned many honours for his passion for supporting local.

“My message of promoting Canadian cuisine eating local, supporting local, drinking local and everything about local,” says Butters.

With a passion for home cooking, Butters came out with his first cooking book on July 21, 2017. The Okanagan Table: The Art of Everyday Home Cooking was awarded the best local cookbook award in Canada by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

This was Butters’ first visit to NAIT.

“I’ve done so much in my career and so, I’m very humble to be here.”

The Chef in Residence program is made possible by the donations of long-time supporters John and Susan Hokanson.
