The iconic ’90s scrunchies are making a comeback. It may be 2019, but these bad boys are back and are more popular than ever.
You can find scrunchies in almost any store you go to, but they can get pretty pricey. So, I learned how to make my own, and now I’m going to show you, step-by-step.
To make your own scrunchies, this is what you’ll need:
- Sewing machine
- Fabric
- Thread (I recommend using a colour that matches your fabric)
- Elastic
- Scissors / fabric cutter
- (2) Safety pins
- Ruler
(You can find all of these materials at Fabricland and/or Michaels)
Step 1: picking a fabric
First things first, you need some fabric. You can find thousands of patterns at Fabricland, which is where I usually get mine.
You can use any type of fabric you want, but I find cotton to be the easiest to work with.
Step 2: measuring and cutting
With a ruler, measure and cut your fabric at four and a half inches by 22 inches. With these measurements, your scrunchie will be the same size as the typical store-bought ones are.
If you want a larger scrunchie, measure and cut your fabric at eight inches instead of four and a half – this will give you a more jumbo look.
Step 3: folding the fabric
Fold the fabric in half so that it’s inside-out, and then sew the ends together.
After the ends have been sewn, lay the fabric flat and fold the top pieces together.
Then, fold the bottom pieces over the top side.
Sew a straight line down the edge of the fabric on the side you just folded, but leave a small opening (you will need this to turn your scrunchie right side out and for threading the elastic through).
Once you’ve finished sewing the edge of your fabric, use the small hole opening to pull your scrunchie right side out.
You should now have large tube with a small opening, like so:
Step 4: measure and cut your elastic
Now, it’s time to measure and cut the elastic.
Using any sized elastic of your choice, measure out eight inches lengthwise and cut it. (I use elastic that is half-an-inch thick for my scrunchies).
Now that the elastic is cut, take two safety pins and hook it through each end of the elastic.
Take one of the safety pins and pull it through your tube of fabric and pull it out of the other end of the tube, so that both ends are visible.
Step 5: sewing the elastic together
Remove the two safety pins and fold one end of the elastic over the other end of the elastic and sew it together.
I usually do this about three or four times, just to make it more secure.
Step 6: closing the scrunchie
Once the elastic is sewn together, tuck it into the fabric and sew the small hole shut so that the scrunchie now has no openings.
Once you’ve sewn the small hole where we had the elastic peeking through, there’s only one thing left to do… scrunch up the scrunchie!
Like a pillow, it’s important to ‘fluff’ so that it gives a more appealing finish.
Scrunch the fabric around the circle to give it a more even full scrunched-up look.
And that’s it! Now you can make your own scrunchies and wear them proud.
Happy scrunching!
